From Interstate 81: Use Exit 47A in Carlisle. This will put you on Rt. 34 South. Take Rt. 34 South EXACTLY 6 miles to the junction of Rt. 34 and Rt. 94. Bear right and continue following Rt. 34 South EXACTLY 2 more miles. Bear right onto Green Mountain Road. Go 7/10 mile to stop sign. Bear right onto Pine Grove Rd. (Pine Grove Rd. is sometimes referred to as Hunter's Run Rd.) The campground is 1 mile ahead on the right. Across the street from the campground, head up the hill (walk on the right side of the fence) to a blue blazed trail that connects to the AT.
Campground: GPS N40.03.821 W77.13.594 --- There are very few parking areas along this section of the AT. 4.60 miles Mountain Creek Campground |
The road instructions above are good although my odometer indicated the distances are not as exact as the listing might suggest. If coming from the direction of Pine Grove State Park, the campground is 5.1 miles from the intersection of Pine Grove Road with PA 233. --- There is a 0.7 mile blue-blazed trail from the campground to the AT. At the campground end, there is no sign. See satellite view of the attached map. The campground office is on the north side of the highway. A house is across the street. Go right along the road from the campground store, cross it and then follow the west boundary between the lawn and woods. The blazes begin at the south east corner of the grassy area. At the AT end, there is no sign, just the blue blazes going trail west (compass south). 05/28/08 --- David Cullen --- http://maps.google.com/maps?q=40.0635%20-77.2268&hl=en&ll=40.063418%2C-77.22654… --- |

8.00 miles Pine Grove Furnace State Park (Dam parking for Pole Steeple Trail) |
It is 2.5 miles from Mountain Creek Campground to this junction. The sign mentioned above actually indicates Pine Grove State Park is to the right along Pine Grove Road. If you wish to park at the dam as suggested above keep right a short distance to the dam parking area which is on the left side of the road. (Marker on map attached above). Rotate the street view to the southeast to see the parking area.
From the other direction on Pine Grove Road, go 2.6 miles east from the intersection with PA 233 to the dam parking area, on the right. --- According to the AT Guide for Pennsylvania (11th ed), it is 0.6 miles along a blue-blazed trail to the Pole Steeple viewpoint and then another 0.5 miles to the AT. 8.00 miles Pine Grove Furnace State Park (Dam parking for Pole Steeple Trail) |
Continue South (compass west) on Pine Grove Rd. (from Mountain Creek Campground) turn left into Pine Grove Furnace State Park at the sign. Park at the dam. Across the road from the parking area is a VERY steep trail that leads to Pole Steeple viewpoint. This trail leads to the view point. Follow the blue blazed trail to the AT. --- Pole Steeple Trail is located off of Railroad Bed Road on the south side of Laurel Lake. There is parking there. There are really great views here but a good many people hike/climb up to this spot from the State Park on a more direct route. There are not many views from the trail on this section of the AT so it worth the side trip to this viewpoint. GPS N40.041652 W77.267455 is for the parking lot at the dam. --- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Pine%20Grove%20Rd%2… --- |
