32.50 miles Pollywog Stream Bridge - logging road |
From Millinocket, travel south on ME 11 - 17 miles. Here you make a right turn onto JoMary Road and come to the JoMary Gate. From here on it is all private gravel logging roads (logging trucks have right of way and barrel down the road - use caution to avoid getting hit by logging trucks and moose) and a fee (per person) is charged to use them. In 6 miles you come to a fork with Johnston Pond Road (.4 mile after Jo Mary Lake Campground entrance on the right), take right fork continuing north on Jo-Mary Road about 10 miles to the Henderson Checkpoint (do not know if there is another fee to continue beyond here). Continue past the checkpoint about 6 miles to the three way intersection. At this junction continue straight about 7 miles to the bridge across Pollywog Stream. The AT also crosses the bridge. Park on the left past the bridge. I have not traversed this road beyond Henderson Checkpoint and these directions beyond that point were provided by Glenn Benkert, gbenkert @ fuse.net on notes he provided me with 11/07/02. The total distance from Millinocket is 46 miles and you should allow 1:30. --- Northbound: It is 17.3 miles of relatively easy terrain that the AT traverses and could be done in a long day from here to Abol Bridge. However the car ride for a shuttle is prohibitive. Note that from this access point you can go .7 miles to the right (northbound) to Nahmakanta Lake Camps. AT hikers can use their facilities for multi-night stays only from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. Beyond Labor Day and until hunting season (end of Oct.)they will accommodate hikers on a one-night basis. This accommodation info I learned from Don Gibbs back in Summer 2003. When I do hike this section (Abol Bridge south to the last JoMary Road crossing (MM 14.9 in section 2) ) in the future, I will try and use this facility as an overnight stop in my travel. The website for this camp is www.nahmakanta.com . JoMary Lake Campground. I highly recommended this as a base for accommodations for all dayhiking in this area & had trailer rentals on site, also hot showers, full bathrooms with hot water, canoe rentals, loons & outstanding view of Mt. Katahdin across Upper JoMary Lake. You pass this CG en route to this and the next five access points. I stayed here in Sept. 2003. 35.10 miles Logging Road at base of Nesuntabunt Mountain |
The same directions as for Pollywog Bridge access (MM 32.5) but 1.2 miles less, as it is the same road and you come to this AT crossing before Pollywog Bridge. --- I have never been here so cannot document about parking here. But it looks like an easy loop hike northbound on the AT (2.6 miles) from here passing Crescent Pond and Pollywog Gorge and you can return via the logging road (1.2 miles). You can use either Nahmakanta Lake Camp or JoMary Lake Campground for a base of accommodations in this area. 3/11/06 --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |

35.10 miles Logging Road at base of Nesuntabunt Mountain |
There are several spots to park near the AT crossing on the Wadleigh Pond Rd. I was able to easily access this area from the Greenville side and didn't have to pay the fee for the Jo-Mary Road. In 2010 a friend of mine thru-hiked the AT and I was able to pick him up nearly every evening and bring him back to my camp on Moosehead Lake. I'd then return him to the trail each morning. 03/05/12 --- Bill Spach --- |

40.80 miles Nahmakanta Lake Access Road |
Again the same directions as the access using Jo Mary Lakes Road passing the Henderson Checkpoint (see 32.5 - Pollywog Stream). Continue past the checkpoint about 6 miles to the three way intersection. At this junction bear right and go about 1.5 miles to the second road on the right. Turn right and go about four miles to the bridge over Nahmakanta Stream. The trail crosses the road just before the bridge. Park on the right here. I have not traversed this road beyond Henderson Checkpoint and these directions beyond that point were provided by Glenn Benkert, gbenkert @ fuse.net on notes he provided me with 11/07/02. The total distance from Millinocket is 45 miles and you should allow 1:30. --- Northbound: It is a pleasant 8.3 mile hike of rolling terrain that the AT traverses and could be done as a nice hike to Pollywog Stream Bridge. The car shuttle is about 13 miles. Note that this is the third of six access points that all use the JoMary Gate. I highly recommend JoMary Lake Campgound, which you pass on the road from JoMary Gate for all six access points as a base for accommodations for all dayhiking in this area & has trailer rentals on site, also hot showers, full bathrooms with hot water, canoe rentals, loons & an outstanding view of Mt. Katahdin across Upper JoMary Lake. I stayed here in Sept. 2003. Their website is http://www.campmaine.com/jo-mary/. 3/12/06 --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |
